Yesterday the best video piece that I have ever seen was uploaded to vimeo and I'm so excited about it. It's 'An Embroidery of Voids' by Daniel Crooks. I saw it at Auckland Art Gallery at the end of 2014 as part of 'A world undone: Works from the Chartwell Collection', but it was produced in 2013 for Melbourne Now. Melbourne is known for it's laneways but I think a similarly effective piece could be made in NZ.
When I saw this work I didn't realize that it had a precursor, 2012s 'A Garden of Parallel Paths'.
I feel like I may even like it better, if I saw it in person.
I can't believe that we never heard about Daniel Crooks when I was in high school, or during my photography degree! They usually love showing us every New Zealand artist they can think of. A lot of photographers are working with moving image these days, most are making fashion videos in conjunction with shoots, but I love this type of moving stills video.
